Following Dr Kris Taylor’s parent evening last week, many parents were left sitting with the same big question: how do we raise good, grounded boys in a world that is loud, online, and constantly shaping their ideas about manhood?
It’s a fair question. Boys today are growing up with gaming, social media, group chats, algorithms, and a steady stream of online voices telling them what strength, success, and masculinity should look like. Some of it is harmless, some of it is helpful, and some of it is straight-up rubbish. That’s why raising boys in the digital age calls for more than hope and crossed fingers; it requires steadiness, structure, and real connection.
Connection before correction
- If every conversation about screens, gaming, or online content starts with a telling-off, boys will often switch off. Fast. The better move is to connect first. Ask what they’re watching, who they follow, what they rate, and why. Stay calm. Stay curious. You do not need to agree with everything to keep the door open. Trust is built when boys feel heard before they are corrected.
Clear boundaries matter
- This is one of those old truths that still holds. Boys need boundaries. Clear rules around phones, gaming, bedtime, and tech-free times help them feel safer, even when they act like your rules are a human rights violation. Keep devices out of bedrooms overnight. Create shared screen spaces. Hold the line with calm consistency. Predictable parenting beats emotional, reactive parenting every time.
Build real confidence – with responsibility
- Healthy self-esteem is not built by endless praise alone. Boys need responsibility, challenge, and support. Give them jobs that matter. Expect effort. Stretch them. Back them. Emotional intelligence matters too – being able to name feelings, handle disappointment, and show respect is not a weakness. It’s strength with backbone.
