Key messages & helpful tips for caregivers
It might look like harmless steam—but it’s not. Many teens think vaping is just flavoured mist, but most vapes contain nicotine—a highly addictive substance that can alter mood, focus, and brain development. Many young people don’t realise how hooked they are until they try to stop… and can’t.
At Path Wānaka, we believe parents deserve the facts—so they can help their teens make safer choices before it’s too late.
💭 “It’s Not Harmless”
Even though vaping is sometimes used to help adults quit smoking, it’s not safe for young people—especially those who’ve never smoked. Breathing chemicals into developing lungs can cause coughing, headaches, and long-term unknown health risks. Staying smokefree and vapefree is always the healthiest choice.
🧠 Teen Brains Are Still Growing
Nicotine can interfere with memory, concentration, and mood regulation. What feels like a stress relief can actually amplify anxiety and irritability over time.
💬 Talk Early, Talk Often
If you don’t talk to your teen about vaping, someone else will—like influencers, peers, or the vape industry. Choose calm moments (like in the car or on a walk) to check in. Ask questions like “What do your friends think about vaping?” or “Have you noticed it around school?”
👂 Listen First, React Later
If your child is vaping, don’t panic. Stay calm and let them talk. Show care, not judgment. Be clear that you don’t support vaping—and why. Help them access support, whether that’s a trusted GP or Quitline on 0800 778 778.
✅ Your Influence Matters
Even if it feels like they’re not listening, you still matter more than you think. Being informed, setting expectations, and showing empathy are your strongest parenting tools.
