Every year on 31 May, Aotearoa marks World Smokefree Day – a day that’s all about supporting people to quit smoking and celebrating the benefits of living smokefree. It’s part of World Smokefree May, a nationwide campaign that reminds us: quitting is always worth another try, and you don’t have to do it alone.
Quitting smoking isn’t easy. Anyone who’s tried knows it often takes more than one go – and that’s completely okay. Each quit attempt builds skills, confidence, and knowledge about what works for you. World Smokefree Day is a chance to reset, reconnect with support, or simply think about what a smokefree life could look like.
The benefits of quitting can start almost straight away. People often notice improvements in breathing, energy levels, taste, and smell, and over time quitting reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other serious health problems. Just as importantly, going smokefree protects the health of whānau, tamariki, and friends by reducing exposure to second-hand smoke.
If quitting feels overwhelming, start small. Some people choose a quit date, others cut back first, and many use free support like texting tools, stop smoking services, or nicotine replacement products. There’s no “right” way – just the way that works for you.
And if you don’t smoke, World Smokefree Day is still a great time to check in on someone who does. A kind word, encouragement, or simple “I’ve got your back” can make a big difference.
This World Smokefree Day, whether you’re quitting, thinking about it, or supporting someone else – every step toward smokefree counts.
